Cleanliness campaign planned by research institute
Sify News, February 21, 2011

New Delhi, Feb 21 (IANS) Announcing the launch of a national campaign for cleanliness, a research institute, ImagIndia, Monday called for forming a committee to find a solution to the problem of garbage in metropolitan cities.

The Delhi-based institute said in a statement: 'Why is our parliament not taking leadership and comprehensive action to clean India? Why are we numb to the dirt and filth we all Indians see around us everyday?'

'The widespread dirt, waste, blocked drainage systems and mountains of garbage all over towns and cities of India are as big a crime as the corruption scandals,' according to the institute's of think tank.

The national campaign to be launched Feb 27 is also getting support from non-resident Indians in the US, Britain and Japan.

The campaign will be kicked off from Rajghat in Delhi, and spread to other towns by March 27.

'A separate JPC (joint parliamentary committee) must be constituted immediately as a national mission to clean India. It must provide comprehensive solutions, policy reforms - and anything else needed, to clean up the country,' said the statement.

The organisers would invite MPs and legislators of each city to join volunteers for the campaign. They would also invite celebrities, ex-servicemen, executives, the youth and children to join in.
